Our keynote speaker is Hope Lugo - Founder of the Network and Catalina Chavez-Tapia (one of the first scholarship recipients). Please join us and honor these two incredible women, our 25 current scholarship winners and past winners.

Napa County Hispanic Network Board of Directors Meeting:
August 19, 2009, Hawthorne Suites (abridged) Present: Alicia Jaramillo, Lupe Rincon, Maria Cisneros, Vicka Llamas, Dan Monez, Rafael Garcia, Ken Fehring, Jose Hernandez, Oscar De Haro. Proxies: Oscar for Ed Shenk and Alicia for Carmen Garcia. Call to Order: President Jose called the meeting to order at 5:35 p.m.

  1. Presentation by, our new consultant, June Alane Reif of MAJICo, on how she can assist with further developing our Hispanic Network website, where Oscar Vega's fine work left off. June shared that she's learning about and working on website since the 1980's and is well versed in the tools of this particular trade. The members reiterated we wanted a site that is user friendly and well articulated. June shared her Dream Weavers site as a model format. Other ideas from the membership included many suggestions: alumni page where scholarship recipients can register themselves and keep us abreast of their academic progress and professional endeavors for the Network to communicate to donors, etc; An archives section; Include a format to collect money like a "Pay Pal" donate item; A format that allows us to provide links to other non-profit/service provider organizations that can be used as referrals for our membership. It was also agreed that June will provide Jose with a list of what she needs from us to assist her in developing the site to our liking. By September 2 members will submit their ideas on what they like or don't from the current site so that June can have a "transformation showcase" of our new site, in time to display at our Banquet. Jose, Ken or Rafael will make certain June gets this logo. Dan will be our point person for communications with June, with a subcommittee comprised of Dan, Jose, Maria (Banquet Chair) and Ken (Membership Chair) to make final decisions on the website appearance, etc.
  2. Committee Report Updates:
Vicka - Napa Reads Francisco Jimenez presentations: Barbara Nemko is working on an article for the Marketplace magazine. The Hispanic Network will have our bilingual/Spanish presentation of Dr. Jimenez on October 22 at St. John's Catholic Church hall. We will be asking for donations to provide some sort of snack/appetizer. The Network has $400 allocated for Dr. Jimenez's presentation, of which approximately $100 will be used for the hall cleanup fee. In addition, the Network will sponsor a ‘brunch' for Dr. Jimenez on Saturday, October 24. Maria will inquire with the GAIA resort in American Canyon as a possible site for the brunch. M/S/C Dan & Oscar to not have wine served at our day (October 22) with Dr. Jimenez. All in Favor.

Banquet - Maria: Dan's public access television interview was great! Maria has an interview on Santa Rosa radio station KBBF and a follow-up interview to include student recipients and possibly parents for September 8, leading up to the Banquet event. The Artie Party Show on Channel 27/28 will afford us more publicity on his September 2 airing. The band that KBBF is donating for the dance segment of the banquet is confirmed: It is a 17-piece "Banda" Wow!! And because of the size of this musical group, the stage will need to be enlarged, meaning we'll likely have fewer tables for guests! Youth under the age of 18 are welcome to attend the dance for $20.00 per person. The Mexican American Golf Association (MAGA) members have indicated they'll be attending. Alicia also extended an invitation to the National Peace Officers Association. Black Tallon will be our security service (unarmed). Karina Garcia, Marketing Manager for Azteca America Spanish broadcasting television - San Francisco affiliate, will be assisting Dan providing the Spanish announcing of the ceremony/event, as a co-MC. They will have a camera crew for recording portions the event and will be providing free community service spots prior to the event. On Comcast, Azteca America can be seen on channel 196. Karina happens to be a former student of President Jose's when he was at Sonoma State University. As a precautionary measure, signage will be posted at Silverado Country Club key locations to put guests on notice that a camera crew from Azteca America will be filming at the event.

Ken - Membership: Ken still needs the missing member list from Rafael for Ken to put together the actual entire list of paid members.

Jose and Lupe -NCHN Strategic Plan: Jose had sent out an update of the met goals of our strategic plan. He asked for input. We need to have this task completed by October.

    Ken -NCHN income investment:
Ken reported that our money is earning a low .061% and that we need to research how this can be raised to at least 2%.M/S/C Alicia and Maria that Ken investigates a better return on our money and send those findings to Maria and Rafael and between the three of them make a decision on where to put our money (including options for checking and investment). All in Favor M/S/C Dan & Alicia to adjourn the meeting; All in Favor. 7:10 p.m.

Minutes respectfully submitted by Oscar De Haro, Secretary

HN August meetings Attended:
President José /Ambassador Renée H attended Fuller Park community meeting August 1
featuring speakers Tom Torlackson (education) with an introduction by HN members Barbara Nemko and Gary Lieberstein who spoke relevant to the Napa District Attorney's Office.

Conversation with Congressman Mike Thompson Aug 7 in St. Helena included educational leaders/HN members: Dan Monez, Dr. Chris McCarthy, José Hernández amongst others; HN fundraiser event purchased/facilitated via HN member Bruce Ketron.

President José attended the August 25 very special visit of Congressman Patrick Kennedy and UFW President Arturo Rodriguez with a large group of farm workers discussing immigration and health reform issues at the Santa Rosa UFW Headquarters via Casimiro Alvarez, Director. That same evening Congressman's father, Senator Edward Kennedy passed away.

President José /Treasurer Maria Cisneros attended the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans 8/22/09 at Sacramento City College. The major talking points addressed. President Obama new education plan unveiled the following four areas: Birth to age 5; K-5; 6-12 (largest section) and Post secondary.

Goals:
One national educational standard/assessment (CA is involved); Teaching honor/pay the best; window of opportunity now for next generation of teachers; Secretary's Duncan's push with unions. Incentive possibilities: Loan forgiveness; struggling schools to pay more; teacher incentives; target 5K worst schools & turn them around (many in CA); develop Data System K-12 of what is needed by parents, teachers, schools, students.

Forthcoming information available through links: Ed.gov and Whitehouse.gov

WHI wants information and involvement of community/us. My personal take on this was the genuine sense we can make a difference; one of the attendees was the Honorable Cruz Reynoso, presently a professor at UC Davis.

Other three Initiatives focus on Historical Black Colleges; Tribal Colleges; Asian/Pacific Islanders & faith base /neighborhood agencies.

Attendees addressed 1) How can Latino education be improved; and 2) What should the White
House Initiative be doing to spearhead those efforts. The feedback is to play an integral role in the creation of a new executive order that will govern the work of said office.
